From looking at the maps in my hiking app, I could tell that I would be passing through some desolate areas these days. I was not sure exactly how it would be and how I would do. In God's book we read about Moses and the people of Isreal making their way through the desert. David, Elijah and even Jesus did some desert time. It is in the desert that we learn that God can do anything. He will guide and provide. Never was God so close to his people Israel in the days of the Old Testament as during the 40 years in the desert. His presence was visible by a cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night. At the end of their journey God said that he used the desert time to see what was in the heart of his people, whether they would trust him or not, whether they would obey his word or not. We see Jesus mastering this test of faith by his repeated expression: "It is written..." The time in the wilderness is not to break us, but to make us. It puts resilience in the soul. Faith becomes a firm foundation that will withstand any affliction, calamity or setback. I would like to think that my trust in God has been made stronger through my walk through the desert places...
